Under The Same Sky: The Story Behind Our Journeys Across Indonesia

Under The Same Sky is a series of seven day journeys, each exploring a different destination: Bali, Flores, Lombok and East Java. The journeys have been open for booking since early this year, and we’ve just released the launch video that introduces the whole series.

Each journey is built around one destination, bringing together the landscapes, cultures and experiences that make it unique. Together they show Indonesia from four angles, the cultural richness of Bali, the traditional and natural beauty of Flores, the diverse landscapes of Lombok and the volcanic terrain of East Java.

Where The Idea Began

The idea for Under The Same Sky came from our trip to Flores. In fact, the concept had been taking shape long before that trip. We kept picturing an epic overland journey, from Ende all the way to Labuan Bajo, where every turn of the road brings a new landscape, a new culture, and a new story.

The trip made one thing clear, travel isn’t only about moving from one destination to another. It’s about the experiences you collect along the way. Every mountain we climbed, every beach we discover, and every person we met changes us in some small way, and that is what we wanted each journey to be built around.

What The Name Means

The name comes from a simple thought. Every traveller takes a different path, but we all stand under the same sky. For us, the sky is a symbol of connection, it doesn’t separate people, it brings them together. It’s also a reminder to stay curious, humble, and grateful for what we find on the road.

In practice, two travellers can have completely different experiences, one watching sunrise over Mount Bromo and another snorkelling with manta rays in Nusa Penida. The stories are different, but the sense of connection is the same. That idea shaped how the series was built. It began with Bali, then continued to Flores, Lombok and East Java with more destinations to come.

Four Journeys, Four Stories

Bali – An island where tradition, nature and everyday life come together. The route runs from Ubud and Kintamani to Sidemen, Candidasa, Nusa Penida and Uluwatu. Along the way you cycle through volcanic highlands, village traditions, manta ray snorkelling and a temple visit at sunset.

Flores -  An island shaped by dramatic landscapes and long standing communities. The journey covers Kelimutu’s three colored lakes, Wae Rebo Village, golden savannahs and Komodo National Park, plus lesser known stops like Nuca Molas and Mausui Savannah.

Lombok – Mountains meeting the sea, from Kuta Mandalika and Sembalun Valley to Senggigi and the Gili islands. Along the way are hidden waterfalls, pink beaches, highlands farms and island hopping across three Gili islands in one day.

East Java – The wilder side of Indonesia, an overland route through tea plantations, sunrise at Mount Bromo, Tumpak Sewu waterfall, Tetes cave, and the Semeru lava fields, ending with a trek to the Blue Fire at Ijen Crater.

Start Your Journey

Different places, different stories, one shared sky. This is only the beginning, and there’s still a lot of Indonesia to discover. Whichever journey you choose, the aim is the same, to slow down, explore beyond the usual path, and bring home stories worth telling.

Flores is a destination that keeps revealing something new the further you go. Many travellers know Flores through Labuan Bajo or Komodo National Park, but there is much more to discover across the island. Unique local traditions come together to create a journey that feels very different from the more familiar side of Indonesia. That is exactly what inspired Xplore Flores. A journey to explore the destination firsthand and discover what makes Flores worth experiencing beyond its best known highlights.

It carries not only books and pencils, but also confidence, opportunity, and the excitement of stepping into a classroom ready to learn. At Smailing Tour DMC , we believe that travel is also about creating genuine connections with the communities that make every destination special. With that belief, we proudly partnered with Pencil For Kids . A community initiative supporting children education across the world. Their mission to provide essential school supplies, helping children access the tools they need for a better learning experience and a brighter future. Last month (July), that purpose came to life. Hundreds of backpacks made their way into the hands of children across Bali, especially North Bali. Every backpack was carefully prepared with school essentials including notebooks, pencils, crayons, and other learning materials.
